A word search is only as good as its word list and its grid. Too few words and the page empties out; too many and the letters stop being a puzzle and start being a wall. This page is built around getting that balance right for the reader you have in mind.
What you can make on this page
The builder creates word search grids from 10x10 up to 20x20 at four difficulty levels, using any of fourteen checked theme lists or a list you type yourself. A pack can hold one to six puzzles, each on its own page, because a word search needs the full sheet for the grid and the word list together.
Each theme list holds between 45 and 65 hand-checked words, and every puzzle draws a fresh selection from it. That depth is deliberate: a shallow list of twenty words would repeat itself by the second or third sheet, so a pack of six puzzles would feel like the same puzzle printed six times.
Choose A4 or US Letter, add name and date fields, include a short rules page, and decide whether to print answer keys. Large print gives you a bigger letter grid for readers who need it, and ink-saving mode drops the grid shading for photocopied batches.

How the four difficulty levels work
Most word search tools change difficulty by making the grid bigger. That mostly changes how long the puzzle takes, not how hard it is. Here difficulty changes which directions a word may run in, which is what actually makes a word hard to spot.
Easy uses across and down, forwards only. Medium adds the two forward diagonals. Hard opens all eight directions, so words can run right to left or bottom to top. Expert keeps all eight directions and changes the filler letters as well.
Why expert changes the filler
In a normal word search the empty squares are filled with random letters. That quietly helps the solver: a run of Q, X, and Z is obviously filler, and the eye learns to skip it.
Expert grids are filled with letters taken from the word list itself, so the filler has the same letter mix as the answers. Nothing is unfair, but the visual shortcuts disappear and you have to read properly.
Choosing how many words to hide
A comfortable density is roughly one word for every 10 to 15 squares, which is about what a printed puzzle book uses. In practice that means 10 words in a 10x10 grid, 13 in a 12x12, 17 in a 14x14, 20 in a 16x16, 24 in an 18x18, and 27 in a 20x20. The builder moves the word count to match whenever you change grid size, and you can override it.
Word count scales with the width of the grid rather than its area. Area grows much faster than a grid's real capacity for words, so setting the count from area leaves large grids impossibly packed and small ones looking half empty. Below this range the sheet fills with filler and feels thin; above it, words overlap so heavily that single letters start doing three jobs at once.
Using your own word list
The custom list is the most useful part of this page for teachers. A spelling list, a set of topic keywords, the names of everyone at a party, or the vocabulary from a specific chapter will all work. Type one word per line or separate them with commas.
- Words are matched on letters only, so spaces, hyphens, and accents are ignored when hiding the word. It still prints in the list exactly as you typed it.
- Words shorter than three letters are skipped, because they appear by accident almost everywhere in a grid.
- A word cannot be longer than the grid is wide. The builder tells you which word is the problem and what grid size would fit it.
- If one word contains another, only the first is used. BOOK and NOTEBOOK cannot share a sheet honestly, because finding NOTEBOOK also finds BOOK in a square the answer key does not mark.
- Mixing very long and very short words gives the best looking grids, since long words provide the crossing points.
How these puzzles are checked
After the words are placed and the empty squares are filled, the finished grid is scanned in all eight directions and every listed word is counted. If a filler letter has accidentally created a second copy of a word somewhere else in the grid, the filler squares inside that copy are re-rolled and the grid is checked again. Squares belonging to a real answer are never touched.
This matters more than it sounds. An accidental duplicate makes the answer key look wrong: a solver circles a perfectly valid instance of the word, then finds it marked in a different place on the solution page. Checking for it is the difference between a generated sheet and a finished one.
Two related cases are handled before the grid is even built. A word that contains another word on the same list is left out, since no amount of checking can make that pair fair. Palindromes such as KAYAK are counted once rather than twice, because reading the same squares backwards is not a second hiding place.
Solving on paper
- Read the word list first and pick the longest word to start with; long words have the fewest possible hiding places.
- Look for unusual letters. A J, Q, X, or Z in the list is worth hunting directly in the grid.
- Scan one row at a time for first letters rather than trying to see whole words at once.
- Cross each word off the list as you ring it, so you never re-search a word you already found.
- Leave the short common words until last; by then the grid has fewer unmarked squares to search.
Classroom and family use
Word searches earn their place as settling tasks, early finisher work, cover lessons, and homework that parents can supervise without explanation. The name and date fields exist so a set can be collected and handed back.
For a group with mixed reading levels, print the same word list at two difficulties rather than two different lists. Everyone works on the same vocabulary and nobody can tell who has the easier sheet.
Printing choices that matter
- One puzzle per page. A grid plus its word list needs the room, and squeezing two onto a sheet makes both harder to read than the difficulty setting intends.
- Large print is worth using well before eyesight is a problem; it also suits young children still forming letters.
- Ink-saving mode removes the grid shading but keeps the letters at full strength, which photocopies more cleanly than a grey grid.
- If a pack is being handed out, print the answer key separately rather than including it in the same stapled set.
Common mistakes when making word searches
- Using a list where every word starts with the same letter, which makes scanning tedious rather than harder.
- Choosing a 20x20 grid for eight words, leaving a page of filler.
- Setting hard difficulty for children who have not yet been told that words can run backwards.
- Including two words where one contains the other, so finding the longer one also reveals the shorter.
