Kakuro looks like a number crossword, but the real pleasure comes from combining small sum facts with crossing logic. A good printed grid leaves enough room for candidates and keeps every diagonal clue easy to read.

What you can make on this page

The builder creates 6x6, 7x7, 8x8, 9x9, 10x10, and 11x11 Kakuro sheets at easy, medium, or hard difficulty. A pack can contain one, two, four, or six puzzles, with one or two grids per page. Large print automatically gives each puzzle a full page.

How to read a diagonal clue

A number in the upper-right half of a dark clue cell belongs to the white run immediately to its right. A number in the lower-left half belongs to the white run immediately below it. Some clue cells carry both numbers because an across run and a down run begin at the same corner.

The diagonal is only a divider. You never write in the clue cell; all entries go in white cells.

The no-repeat rule is local

Digits 1 to 9 may not repeat inside one run. That rule is not applied to the entire printed row or column. If a clue cell splits a row into two separate runs, the same digit may legally appear once in each run.

This is the most common rule first-time solvers accidentally borrow from Sudoku, so it is worth checking before marking an answer wrong.

Start with forced sum combinations

Some totals have only one possible set of non-repeating digits for a given run length. Two cells totalling 3 must be 1 and 2; two cells totalling 17 must be 8 and 9. The order is not fixed until the crossing clues add more information, but the combination itself is already known.

A practical paper-solving method

  1. Find short runs with very low or very high totals; they usually have the fewest combinations.
  2. Write candidate digits lightly in the corners of white cells.
  3. Compare each cell's across candidates with its down candidates and keep only the overlap.
  4. When one digit is placed, remove it from the other cells in that same run.
  5. Recheck the total and the no-repeat rule before committing the final cell in a run.

Choosing size and difficulty

Grid size mostly changes how much information must be tracked at once. Difficulty changes the shape and interaction of the runs, so an easy 9x9 can still be more approachable than a hard 7x7. Move up one setting at a time if you want a smooth paper-solving progression.

For 10x10 and 11x11, one puzzle per page is the comfortable choice. Two per page is available for compact packs and answer sheets, but the clue text is naturally smaller.

Kakuro for maths practice

Kakuro reinforces addition, complements, and flexible number bonds without becoming a column of arithmetic questions. The solver has to explain why a combination fits both directions, not merely calculate a total.

In a group, ask pupils to circle the clue they used and compare candidate combinations before sharing a finished digit. That keeps the focus on reasoning rather than guessing speed.

Why this page uses pre-made Kakuro levels

Attractive Kakuro is unusually sensitive to its dark-cell pattern, run lengths, clue totals, and the way crossings constrain one another. Generating all of that in a visitor's browser can be slow, especially on larger boards, and a quick generator can produce awkward shapes.

Instead, this page uses a supplied bank of 1,167 pre-made puzzles across all 18 size-and-difficulty combinations. Every included record passed the bank's solver gate with exactly one solution. The browser only chooses, displays, and prints those checked records, which keeps the page responsive and the answer key stable.

Common paper-solving mistakes

  • Reading an across clue as a down clue because the diagonal halves were reversed.
  • Repeating a digit within one run even though the cells still add to the target.
  • Treating the no-repeat rule as if it covered the whole row like Sudoku.
  • Writing a combination in a fixed order before checking the crossing runs.
  • Printing large hard grids too small to hold pencil candidates comfortably.

Using the answer key well

When a total fails, compare one run at a time rather than copying the whole solved grid. Find the first cell where your entry differs, erase the connected candidates, and resume from the clue that exposed the error.

Teachers can keep solution pages separate from the handout. Family and club packs are often friendlier when the key is included at the very end.

What Kakuro size should a beginner choose?

Start with a 6x6 easy puzzle printed one per page. The runs are easier to follow, the clues have more room, and there are fewer crossing combinations to manage.

Does a digit have to be unique across the whole row?

No. A digit cannot repeat inside one uninterrupted across or down run. It may appear again elsewhere in the same full row or column if a dark clue cell separates the runs.

Are these printable Kakuro puzzles checked for one solution?

Yes. This page loads pre-made puzzle records that passed the supplied solver verification gate with exactly one solution. It does not rely on slow browser generation.

What does ink-saving mode change?

Ink-saving mode keeps the same clues and diagonals but prints clue cells with a light background instead of a solid dark fill. It is useful for large classroom or club batches.
